Cycling Safety Guide: What You Need to Know (Infographic)

According to the United Nations, there are an estimated two billion bikes in use globally, and this is projected to increase to five billion by 2050. While it is fantastic to see a massive uptake in such a healthy and eco-friendly transportation mode, it’s also important that all these new cyclists take a pragmatic approach to road safety.

Cycling

Figures reveal that cyclists are among the most vulnerable groups on the roads. For example, if we look at Europe, we can see that cyclists comprised 7.8% of the total number of road accident fatalities in 2015. This number rises to 12% when you look solely at roads in urban areas. Cyclists are more vulnerable than motorists because their vehicle does not offer the same level of protection as cars. As such, cyclists are more likely to be seriously injured or even killed in an accident.

Fortunately, there are many quick and easy preventative measures that cyclists can take to protect themselves on the road. Before setting off, they should have an excellent knowledge of the rules of the road. What’s more, it’s important to have sufficient safety equipment such as a helmet, lights, mirrors, and high-visibility clothing. Finally, cyclists should educate themselves on the risk factors that may lead to an accident and learn what actions they can take to lessen these.
